ROCKFORD, Ill. – Rock Valley was in control for the majority of Saturday afternoon's home opener versus Milwaukee Area Technical. The Golden Eagles controlled 67% of the possession and outshot the Stormers 31-4. The win over MATC was head coach Tim Romanello's fifth straight home-opening win.
"The boys worked hard at training [this week]," said head coach Tim Romanello. "I think from top-to-bottom the crew really wanted to remedy our Sunday performance, and I think you saw their hard work today."
Just about the only thing that didn't express the Golden Eagles' control was the scoreboard. Despite 31 shots (19 on target), Rock Valley managed only two goals.
"Soccer is a funny game," said Romanello following the game. "You can control every aspect of the game, yet still have a sour taste because of a score line."
"The focus has to remain on the play and what the ultimate goal of playing the game is," continued Romanello.
Sam Herrejon would break the scoreless action with a goal in the 41st minute. As the MATC goalkeeper attempted to play out of the back, Herrejon capitalized on a larger touch from the keeper, then tucked it into the back of the net.
HALF TIME: Rock Valley 1-0 Milwaukee
Following the Herrejon goal right before the break, Rock Valley's complete control seemingly paved the way for more goals and a breakout performance by the Golden Eagles' attack. But a shock goal by Milwaukee's Ramiro Gonzalez in the 58th minute leveled the score at 1-1.
It didn't take long for Rock Valley to regain the lead as Edwin Navas hit the eventual game-winner in the 65th minute, securing the game 2-1 as the Golden Eagles would see the game out for the final 25 minutes.
