ROCKFORD, Ill. – Rock Valley College men's soccer faced a pair of challenging tests this week, suffering a narrow road loss to Black Hawk Community College on Thursday before responding with a hard-fought draw against Dakota Tech Community College on Sunday.
The Golden Eagles traveled to Black Hawk on Thursday and found themselves trailing 1-0 after conceding on a corner kick early in the match. RVC responded by creating several quality opportunities throughout the opening half but was unable to find the equalizer before the break.
Rock Valley made tactical adjustments at halftime and quickly saw them pay off, leveling the match at 1-1 early in the second half. The Golden Eagles continued to apply pressure and earned an opportunity to take the lead from the penalty spot, but the attempt was unsuccessful.
Despite the missed opportunity, RVC remained on the front foot and continued to generate chances. The Golden Eagles outshot Black Hawk and held the advantage in the major statistical categories, but the match remained tied entering the final minutes.
Black Hawk capitalized on a late RVC error in the 89th minute against the run of play to score the deciding goal and hand the Golden Eagles a difficult 2-1 defeat.
Rock Valley returned to the field Sunday looking to respond against a competitive Dakota Tech Community College side. Once again, the Golden Eagles were forced to play from behind after Dakota Tech converted an early counterattack to take the lead.
RVC remained composed and continued searching for a way back into the match. The persistence paid off late in the second half when the Golden Eagles found the equalizer to bring the contest level.
Rock Valley continued to push for a game-winning goal and created multiple opportunities down the stretch, but neither side was able to find the decisive finish as the match ended in a draw.
While the Golden Eagles were unable to come away with a victory from the two matches, the performances provided valuable tests as the season progresses. RVC showed the ability to respond after falling behind in both contests while continuing to create opportunities and compete through the final whistle.
Rock Valley will now turn its attention to its next Region IV matchup as the Golden Eagles continue preparing for the important stretch of the season ahead.
