Women's Basketball: Golden Eagles Win in Final Seconds

Rockford, IL: The #11 Golden Eagles were tested on Saturday at home against Region 24 opponent John Wood. RVC would defeat John Wood 62-61 and moves to 3-0 on the year.

It was a back and forth game from the start to the thrilling finish in The Nest. RVC would take the early lead against the Blazers 4-2 in the game before John Wood would take an 5-4 lead of their own in the first quarter. Rock Valley would finish the first quarter with a lead 16-12. "We knew coming in that it would be a good challenge for us to play John Wood this early in the season. They are a completely brand new team with some talented players under their first year head coach and they PLAY HARD every single possession. " stated Head Coach Darryl Watkins

The Golden Eagles would continue to battle back and forth with the Blazers the entire game even falling behind 41-42 at the end of the 3rd quarter. "It seemed like everytime we made a run to try to put the game away they answered with one of their own. Until late in the game on the final possession we got the last shot and opportunity to win the ball game and we did." Stated Watkins. Mia Moore would do that for the Golden Eagles hitting the go ahead free-throw with .3 seconds on the clock to give Rock Valley the lead when it mattered most. Maya Mitchell and Jasmyn Hale would lead the Golden Eagles with double doubles of 14 points each and 16 rebounds for Hale and 13 rebounds for Mitchell. Sophomore McKenna Williams would record 10 points and 6 rebounds and freshman Mia Moore would round out double digit scores with 10 points, and 7 rebounds. Karley Colson would provide a spark off the bench for the Golden Eagles with 9 points on 3-7 shooting from behind the 3pt line.

"It was an ugly win but we found a way to stay together and pull this one out." Stated sophomore Maya Mitchell
