ROCKFORD, Ill. – It was an uneventful two-overtime affair between two of the current top four teams on Saturday. Despite outshooting the visiting Waubonsee Chiefs Saturday afternoon, Rock Valley managed eight shots on target, two of which were saved in the second overtime period to preserve the 0-0 draw. The draw doesn't quite earn the fourth and final playoff spot for Rock Valley, but it does move them one point closer. The Golden Eagles will have to wait until Tuesday afternoon against Moraine Valley.
Â
The first half was an incomplete one from head coach
Tim Romanello's perspective. "I didn't think we were very good today. We struggled to string passes together, and really created very little."
Â
Waubonsee controlled the first ten minutes of the game, but outside of a few dangerous crosses, Rock Valley managed the match accordingly and held #22 Waubonsee level. Known to control the possession statistic, Rock Valley managed only a few occasions to goal and looked impatient. As the half expired, you could see the growing frustration from the home side.
Â
HALF TIME: Rock Valley 0-0 Waubonsee
Â
The second half started much differently from the first. The Golden Eagles grew nicely into the second half and began to control the possession and settled into more dangerous chances. The pressure applied to the Waubonsee backline began to open up the game.
Max Rebori saw a great chance in front of goal parried away by the Chiefs' goalkeeper in the 55
th minute, then
Brady Williams' chance just moments later left just wide.
Â
Alyas Fritz managed the shutout, his fifth this season. "I thought both our goalkeepers have managed great games this season. Alyas [Fritz] gave us a great effort today, managed the service from Waubonsee and was strong in the air," said Romanello.
Â
Rock Valley looked the best all match in the overtime stanzas, especially the second ten minutes.
Roberto Davila saw his attempt knocked over the bar and was denied the winner. To the same result,
Alfredo Jimenez saw his breakthrough kick-saved wide and denied a second winning attempt.
Â
"I liked how we grew into the match," said Romanello after the match. "But these empty matches leave a sour taste in your mouth."
Â
FULL TIME (2OT): Rock Valley 0-0 Waubonsee
