ROCKFORD, Ill. – It took more than a month to finish off Moraine Valley, but the Rock Valley College Golden Eagles men completed their assignment on a windy Tuesday afternoon, against the Cyclones oddly enough. Elijah Rufer scored off a cross from Julio Davila in the seventh minute back in early September for the 1-0 lead. Despite the strong start, the Golden Eagles allowed Moraine Valley onto the score sheet as Gael Arriaga lofted a shot up and over the Alyas Fritz in the 21st minute to level the game at 1-1.

Rock Valley would quickly respond. Brady Williams would control things in the midfield, threading a ball through the Cyclone backline for a crafty assist to Brayan Cuevas-Tapia for the goal and a 2-1 lead. RVC would control things the remainder of the half, unleashing 17 shots, seven on target, but Eduardo Sandez was up for the challenge in goal.

HALF TIME: Rock Valley 2-1 Moraine Valley

Much of the same would follow in the second half, this time, the game would be interrupted by a storm front, suspending the game until October with only 30 minutes to play. As things would play out, the final 30 minutes would be intense with massive playoff implications. Heading into the final half-hour of action, only one final playoff spot was left to secure, and only two teams were playing for it: Rock Valley and Moraine Valley.

To add to the drama, 40 mph winds played out to where Moraine Valley would have a significant advantage in the final stanza. "It's a tough, tough ask," said head coach Tim Romanello following the match. "For both teams. A certain pressure goes along with having that wind at your back. Equally so, that wind really takes away from any possible game plan you have."

Despite the strong wind disadvantage, the Golden Eagles managed 5 shots, all of which on goal to Moraine Valley's four shots, one of which was a game-saving touch over the bar by Fritz. In the final thirty minutes, all four of the RVC attacking front line had an excellent opportunity to expand upon the lead.

"We certainly love to do things the hard way," added a smirking Romanello. "Grit is a good thing for a team, but it sure would be nice to help ourselves out once in a while.

The game would close out with one final opportunity for Moraine Valley, a stoppage-time corner kick that saw floated over the crowd of players.
