Rockford, IL- #4 RVC Women's Basketball comes out on top on Thursday night 95-38 over Wright College to open up N4C Conference play. The Golden Eagles improve to 11-6 overall and (1-0) in N4C play.
The Golden Eagles came out hot scoring 26 first quarter points, led by
Marissa Kershner 11 point first quarter surge. "She got herself going early by getting to the basket right out the gate getting herself a layup seeing the basketball going in and as all good shooter know they just have to see it go in to get cooking" Â "Stated Watkins. And cooking is exactly what Kershner would do going 9-15 FG and 5-10 from 3 for the game in route to a game high 28 points. The Golden Eagles opened the first half of the on a tear scoring 50 points shooting 44% from the field and 37% from 3pt, all while holding Wright to 18 first half points.
This was a lead in which the Golden Eagles would continue to build up to 59 points seeing 4 players including 3 starters get reach double figures. "Our offense was just clicking, we were getting our transition looks, knocking down the open 3's off drive and kicks and moving the basketball quickly against the zone finding our flashers." said Head Women's Basketball CoachÂ
Darryl Watkins. RVC did an amazing job of sharing the basketball against Wright College. "When we are sitting down bought in to the defensive end of the court, finishing plays by rebounding and then pushing the ball in transition quickly and making the extra pass we are a tough defend. 67 rebounds in a game is all heart and 30 assist in a game is amazing all the credit goes to this group and just shows the unselfishness and willingness to put their sisters first." Stated Watkins.
An unselfish play that has led to the Golden Eagles success so far this year. The Golden Eagles are forcing just about 25 turnovers a game on the defensive end of the court all while rebounding the ball at a high level averaging 52 boards a game which is the nation's 7
th best average. The Golden Eagles currently are also averaging 19.8 assist per game which is the nation's 3
rd best average at the Division 3 level. Those same assist are what has led to Rock Valley's 1359 points on the season so far which leads the entire nation for total points scored and has the Golden Eagles sitting at 3
rd with an 84.9 points per game average. "When we are playing our brand of basketball and EVERYONE on the team is contributing it is a pretty special sight to see." Stated Watkins
