Rock Valley Women's Soccer Caps Perfect Weekend with Win Over No. 16 Northeast
The Rock Valley College women's soccer team wrapped up a strong showing at the 2025 NJCAA Midwest Classic with a 3-2 victory over NJCAA Division II No. 16 Northeast Community College (NE) on Sunday. The Golden Eagles finished the weekend 2-0 against nationally ranked opponents to open their season.
Northeast struck first, capitalizing on a defensive clearance to take an early 1-0 lead. Rock Valley responded before halftime when sophomore Isabelle Rivera buried a rebound off a corner kick from Johanna Hawley.
The Golden Eagles came out firing after the break. Just seven minutes into the second half, sophomore Araceli Mendez linked up with Emilia Arias, who delivered a stunning 20-yard strike to put RVC ahead 2-1. Northeast quickly answered, leveling the match at 2-2 with a goal in the 60th minute.
Rock Valley sealed the win late when Rivera drove into the box and played Crystal Garcia in behind the defense. Garcia squared the ball across to Keyla Suarez, who calmly slotted home the game-winner. The assist marked Garcia's second consecutive match setting up the decisive goal, continuing her hot start to the season. Goalkeepers Kailie Murphy and Kristina Vinger split time in net throughout the weekend, helping set a strong defensive foundation for the Golden Eagles' perfect start to the season.
"It was great to see the energy and attitude especially playing strong competition on back to back days away from home," said Coach Watkins. "Facing some top opposition over the weekend to start the season really helps us set a standard that we have to maintain and build on through the season. Having twenty three freshman coming into the team this season it is great to see them gel with our returners so quickly especially against high level competition."
With the victory, Rock Valley improves to 2-0 overall. The Golden Eagles now turn their attention to Region 4 play, traveling to face Waubonsee Community College on Saturday, August 30.
