Rock Valley College Tops Black Hawk College, Heading to Region 4 Championship Game vs. South Suburban College
Rockford, Ill. — The Rock Valley College Women's Soccer team matched last year's program record with 17 wins in a season and recorded their 12th clean sheet of the year in a thrilling semifinal victory over Black Hawk College.
The first half was a hard-fought midfield battle, with the Golden Eagles creating several dangerous chances from corner kicks and a crisp passing sequence that ended with winger Johanna Hawley being played through on goal. However, the Brave's goalkeeper came up with an outstanding save to keep the match scoreless.
In the second half, Rock Valley began to dominate possession, adding 18 more shots and hitting the crossbar multiple times. The Golden Eagles also had a goal disallowed for offsides. Black Hawk managed two strong counterattacks, but RVC goalkeeper Kailie Murphy came up big to keep the shutout intact. Regulation ended in a 0-0 draw, sending the match into extra time.
RVC was quick to impose themselves in extra time, with Emilia Arias striking a free kick off the crossbar from 35 yards out in the opening minute. The Golden Eagles quickly regained possession, and Kassandra Jimenez laid the ball off to Arias, who beat her defender and fired home from 20 yards to seal the golden goal victory within the first few minutes of extra time.
"We really had to keep up the tempo and pressure that we built through the second half," said Coach Watkins. "Our talk going into extra time was to continue the urgency and get the winner within the first five minutes."
The Golden Eagles advance to the Region 4 and Midwest District Championship this Saturday in Madison, Wisconsin, at the Irwin A. & Robert D. Goodman Sports Complex. Rock Valley will face NJCAA Division II No. 17 South Suburban College — marking the third consecutive year the two teams have met in the championship game.
