For the 8th time in ten seasons, the Rock Valley College Women's Basketball program competed in the NJCAA DIII National Tournament. The Golden Eagles came into the national tournament with an at-large bid all while being rewarded the #6 overall seed in the tournament. RVC would face off against the #11 seed Hostos Community College (NY) in the first round of the tournament.
The Caimans started out with a 7-0 run to begin the game before heading to the end of the quarter with a score of 21-11. "They jumped out on us early with their press. It was effective and caused us some fits for us. We did our best to weather the storm." Stated coach
Darryl Watkins. The Golden Eagles would eventually head into the halftime locker room trailing 37-24. The Golden Eagles did just that in the 3rd quarter putting together a 8-0 run of their own to tighten the score before Hostos would responded with an 11-2 run of their own in the final quarter to put the game away and secure the win by the final score of 59-74. The Golden Eagles were led by
Camron Blank's 23 points, 10 rebounds, 4 assist and 3 steals. The only other Golden Eagle to reach double figures was
Breeyona Burrell with 10 points and 5 rebounds.
The Golden Eagles fall to the DIII National Tournament consolation bracket game where they would see their season fall at the hands of College of Rhode Island 46-61.
"We didn't play our best game, couldn't finish certain shots that are normally a given, and we didn't take care of the ball particularly well. And when you can't find a way to score that puts you in a tough situation." Stated Watkins The Golden Eagles were led by sophomore
Kaycia Zimmerman (12 points, 10 rebounds), and freshman
Camron Blank (11 points, 10 rebounds).
"At the end of the day there is nothing for this group to hang their heads about looking back on this season. They did everything we asked of them from day one battling adversity from covid related issues, and injuries they found a way to make the national tournament as an at-large bid. Even though it wasn't the finish we wanted only 12 teams in DIII made it to March." Stated Watkins
