Golden Eagles Drop Top 10 Showdown

12/15/2019 11:34:00 AM

Champaign, IL- #6 RVC Women's Basketball fell short on Saturday afternoon losing heavy weight match 69-74 to #10 Parkland Community College. The Golden Eagles fall to 9-4 on the season.

The Golden Eagles jumped out to an early 16-12 lead in the first quarter. "We came out with big time energy and were ready to go from the tip-off." Stated Watkins. Our sense of urgency was there to start the game. We talked about it this week that heading to Parkland would be a tough place to play and that they would be up for us to make a statement to the nation.

The second quarter would seriously hurt the Golden Eagles as Parkland would go on a run to take the lead for the rest of game. "Parkland came out and capitalized on our mistakes in the 2nd quarter. They went on a 17-2 run to build a 13-point halftime lead." said Head Women's Basketball Coach Darryl Watkins. The Golden Eagles would finish the half on a 8-2 run of their own leading into the 2nd half of the game in which Rock Valley would outscore the Cobras, 43-35, but it would be too little too late as Parkland's 2nd quarter surge would be the story of the game and ultimately too much to overcome.

"We talk about putting together a full 40 minutes of focus and effort on a daily and if we don't that will hurt us, in this game it hurt us. We played 33 minutes of solid basketball. The other 7 was our downfall." Stated Watkins Parkland is a good team, they are now 10-0 and ranked 10th in the latest NJCAA DII poll. We don't have time to sit back and sulk in defeat as we have to have a quick bounce back as our schedule continues to challenge us as we head down to Peoria, IL to play NJCAA DII #12 Illinois Central College on Tuesday December 17th.

The Golden Eagles were led by freshman's Hannah Malcomson (22 points), and Maria Hilby (10 points) and sophomore Carson Nitz (14 points).
