Morton College Notes
Morton competes in
Region 4 of the
National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) and in the Skyway Conference. Coach Kristen Shimko hasn't coached a game yet at Morton College, but the new women's basketball coach already has generated a positive buzz.
She's already got 13 players committed to play this season, including five returning players. Her assistant, Amy Jendra, is a product of her father's highly-successful George Shimko Basketball School.
"We're enthusiastic to have Kristen on board," Morton College athletic director Billy Jacklin said. "She's a high-energy, hard-working, determined person. When she walks into the gym, her charisma rubs off on to the players in the gym. I'm confident she'll do a great job of taking Morton College women's basketball to the next level."
A closer look at the Shimko DNA reveals an emphasis on the fundamentals of the game and preparing players for life beyond basketball. As a full-time academic advisor at Morton College, Shimko will be able to impact students looking to take the next step in their lives, whether it be in a career field or moving on to a four-year school.
Darryl Watkins is entering his 1
st year at the helm for the Golden Eagles. Watkins spent five years as an Assistant Women's Basketball Coach for the Golden Eagles under legendary Coach Misty Opat. In five years, he was an integral part of the 2013, 2015 and 2017 National Championship teams and the 2014 National Runner-Up. He was heavily involved in the program's recruiting, player development, strength and conditioning, and game preparation. RVC was an impressive 138-24 over those five seasons. A Rockford native, Watkins graduated from hometown Auburn High School in 2007, and from Rock Valley College with his AA in 2009. He has also received his bachelor's from Rockford University in Physical Education in 2012, as well as his master's in Sports Administration from Chadron State College (NE) in 2016.
