The RVC Women's Basketball team hosted back to back games this weekend against Kishwaukee College and Owens Community College winning both improving to 6-1 on the season.
"This weekend was good for us to get in back to back games" stated Head Women's Basketball CoachÂ
Darryl Watkins. At the national level you have to be able to play multiple days in a row and I feel like our ladies stepped up to the challenge and handled it."
The Golden Eagles would face Kishwaukee College to start the weekend off with a win 101-59. A game which saw every single player reach the box score and also have 6 of those ladies reach double figures
Samantha Harris,
Carson Nitz,
Maria Hilby,
Hannah Malcomson,
Marissa Kershner and
Alexcia Neal. Neal led everyone in the game with a big double-double on the night 20 points and 12 rebounds. "At her size you wouldn't think she would be one of our leading rebounders, but Lex has a real good feel to where the ball is going to come off the rim she pursues it and then just doesn't let anyone else get the ball. Lex is the driving force to the reason why we are leading the nation in offensive rebounds per game and why we are second in the nation in total rebounds per game" says Watkins.
Sunday's match up saw the reigning National Runner-Up Owens Community College come to town. Last year Owens defeated Rock Valley College twice on the year by an average of 23 points, including one win in the district championship game which sent the Express to the National Championship. The story would be different this time around though. With the Golden Eagles defeating 103-71.
The Golden Eagles would control the game from start to finish. "We wanted to play to our strengths and that was to get out pressure the basketball and play an up-tempo style game, and we did just that. At times it felt like it was a track meet because of the pace" stated Watkins.
The Golden Eagles were led by
Hannah Malcomson with 27 points and 6 steals,
Marissa Kershner with 26 points,
Carson Nitz with 21 points, 10 assist, and 0 turnovers,
Samantha Harris with 11 points 10 rebounds, and
Maria Hilby to round out the double digit scoring with 10 points 10 rebounds.
