Rockford, IL— Rock Valley won their third straight match with a thrilling 4-3 overtime victory over Elgin in the Region IV Quarterfinal on Saturday afternoon in Rockford.
The four-five matchup was a rematch of a late-August 3-3 double-overtime affair between the two teams. The Quarterfinal provided the same fireworks, and anyone in attendance got to witness two vibrant attacking displays, seven goals and late-match drama and overtime heroics Saturday.
Rock Valley looked choppy early, struggling to string passes together and Elgin took advantage by converting a cross from a set piece in Rock Valley's half for the early 1-0 lead in the tenth minute.
As the match moved into the half-hour mark, Rock Valley had grown into the game nicely, controlling the lion-share of the possession and a number of chances on goal. The Golden Eagles would tie the match at 1-1 in the 35th minute when  freshman midfielder
Bernie Dominguez saw his 30-yard shot find the far side-netting.
Rock Valley would get a chance at the lead, when sophomore midfielder
Pedro Acosta was taken down in the box. Freshman
Isaias Nieto would fail to convert the penalty, and the match would stay 1-1 at the half.
Coming out of the break, Rock Valley would take a 2-1 advantage as a Acosta's cross ricocheted off a Elgin defender, eluding the diving goalkeeper. The score would remain 2-1 until the 65th minute, when sophomore centerback
Trevor Salisbury took a heavy touch, and as he attempted to track the ball down, his momentum took both himself and the ball out-of-bounds and out-of-position. Elgin capitalized and turned the thrown-in into a transition breakaway that would end up beating the Rock Valley goalkeeper, Chris Perea, and equalize.
Elgin would quickly score again, taking a 3-2 lead soon after.
Rock Valley seemed to settle down and create quality goal-scoring chances, only to see them saved or blocked in front of goal. Â With five minutes remaining,
Bernie Dominguez scored his second of the match, finishing off Acosta's cross for the late game-tying goal in dramatic fashion.
And just as overtime would begin, it would end. After Perea would collect a loose cross from Elgin, Perea sent the ball forward, into the path of a sprinting Acosta, who only needed a simple head flick over a fast-approaching goalkeeper to find the back of the net and the match-winner.
Rock Valley will travel to the top-seeded Triton College on Tuesday night in the Region IV Tournament Semifinal. Kickoff is scheduled for 7PM.
