Season Finale Holds Opportunities

Rockford, IL -- The men's soccer team returns to action this weekend for their regular season finale versus Madison College on Saturday. The match will mark the side's sixth match in thirteen days. During the stretch, the men have gone 2-3-0 with three straight losses sandwiched by a pair of convincing wins over Milwaukee Area Technical College.

Madison will make the return leg to Rockford as the current three-seed in the Region IV Tournament set to begin a week from Saturday. Rock Valley lost the first leg in Madison, 1-0, back in September, and sit as the current sixth-seed. Much is at stake when the two teams square off, as seeds three through six are still up for grabs. Seeding scenarios are a bit complicated as two of the four teams have a game at hand--Madison and Elgin--leaving both RVC and Joliet with limited room to both fall or rise in seeding.

Should both Rock Valley and Joliet earn the same result on Saturday, RVC will still need to make up a two goal differential on Joliet in order to move from sixth to fifth. At stake for Madison, the Wolfpack could win both their remaining matches (at RVC, at MATC) and still drop from three to four should Elgin win both of their remaining matches (at Harper, vs. Milwaukee). After the dust settles from the weekend and final fixtures mid-week next week, the Golden Eagles will either travel to Madison for a third match-up, or make a return trip to Elgin in what could be a wild rematch following their 3-3 thriller in Rockford earlier this season.

"Regardless of all the results, this [match] is another opportunity for us to prove we are progressing," said head coach Tim Romanello Thursday following the team's practice.

The bottom line still is glaringly pretty simple: score, win and build as much momentum as possible heading into a week of preparation for their quarterfinal fixture, regardless of who they play.
