M-Basketball: Golden Eagles Pick Up 2 Wins Over the Weekend, Improve to 6-1

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 RVC Men's Basketball played on back-to-back days over the weekend, and came away victorious in both with a 66-57 win over Morton College (Cicero, IL) and 83-78 over Columbus State Community College (Columbus, OH).

"We competed this weekend, but we still have a ways to go," said Head Men's Basketball Coach Evan Lavery. "We successfully earned double digit second half leads, and successfully gave those leads away and breathed life into Morton and Columbus State. We will study the films and see exactly what we need to do in order to sustain, and hopefully build, our second half leads in future situations."

Saturday afternoon's game with Morton featured both teams shooting a combined 41-130 (31.5%), but strong RVC free throw shooting (20-27 for 74.1%) and half court defense allowed the Golden Eagles to come away with a win. Sophomore guard Malique Ross scored 21 points. Darius Branch added 14 points, while Elijah Pappas contributed 11 points. DeMari Davis ripped down 10 rebounds.

On Sunday's match-up between District 2 opponents, the Golden Eagles forced 20 Cougar turnovers to help fuel a 83-78 win in The Nest. RVC held a 39-25 halftime lead, and stretched the lead to as much as 21 points (62-41) before a run by Columbus State cut into the Golden Eagle lead. Ross and Branch led the way with 16 points each. Davis contributed a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Jaylen Jones had a career-high 12 points, and DeAnte Barnes added 11 points in the winning effort.
