Golden Eagles Punch Ticket to Championship Match!

Don't look now but Rock Valley College Men's Soccer Team is red hot! They earned another victory Tuesday afternoon against the Carl Sandburg Chargers in the Region 4 semifinal pushing their record to 13-5-2 and 8-0-2 in their last 10 matches. Carl Sandburg came into the game as the twentieth ranked team in NJCAA Division II, and the #2 overall seed in the Region 4 tournament. The Chargers were the second ranked team to fall to the RVC this week to go along with #16 Morton College. If you are just looking at the seeds you would think these matches were huge upsets, but anyone watching can tell Rock Valley is playing like they could be the 1 seed.  

Carl Sandburg earned their spot in the semifinal by beating Moraine Valley CC 2-0 this past Saturday. Heading into the match the Chargers were sporting a 12-2-2 record, winning their previous five matches. RVC had earned their spot in the semifinal by winning a nail biter against Morton 4-3. It was a battle of two red hot teams, but in the end RVC would be the only team moving on.  

Rock Valley and Carl Sandburg was a stalemate for most of the match, this was a place that Rock Valley had found themselves in plenty of times this year. The Golden Eagles had previously been in 12 matches that finished in a tie or were decided by 1 goal. After 45 minutes no one was able to find the back of the net, that also continued for most of the second half. However, the Golden Eagles were used to this, and when the time presented itself, they struck. In the 79th minute Taylor Sowell netted the first and last goal of the game. Rock Valley was able to hold on for the last 11 minutes and preserve the win, punching their ticket to the Region 4 Championship Game.  

Rock Valley is awaiting who they will play, as the other semifinal between Prairie State and Kishwaukee was suspended, and play will be resumed tomorrow. Region 4's championship match will be held Saturday at Madison College at 12pm.
