ROCKFORD, Ill. –
It looked like the Golden Eagles were well on their way to a second consecutive away victory Wednesday afternoon as
Roberto Davila broke away to goal in the match's first thirty seconds. The missed opportunity from the onset set the tone for a very frustrating afternoon for the Golden Eagles side.
Â
In fact, none of Rock Valley's eight first half shots would find their way into the back of the net. The Golden Eagles controlled much of the first half, but either missed quality chances in front of goal, or could not quite connect their final pass to give them clear scoring chances. It was only the second time Rock Valley would be held scoreless in the first half, and only the third half this season.
Â
"Yeah, it's frustrating," said head coach
Tim Romanello. "We have to be clinical in front of goal. We've let a bunch of chances go empty and today we paid the price."
Â
HALF TIME: Rock Valley 0-0 Illinois Valley
Â
The second half began similarly with a quick chance for the Golden Eagles, this time just wide of the net. As frustration grew, Illinois Valley converted two chances just six minutes apart.
Tyrese Baijnath gave Illinois Valley the 1-0 lead when he beat goalkeeper Miguel DeLeon in the 50th minute. Six minutes later, Vasco Montez headed home a goal for a 2-0 lead and the game seemingly looked over.
Â
As the second half moved along, Rock Valley seemed to create chances with the growing sense of urgency. Ivan Vazquez found Julio Davila in the 75th minute, beating the IVCC goalkeeper on the far post to move the game to 2-1.
Â
The Golden Eagles' attack managed 4 quality shots on goal in the match's final ten minutes, but just never found the back of the net.
Â
"We let [Illinois Valley] off the hook today," continued Romanello. "Even down two goals, it never felt like we were out of the match. That is the potential this group has. We didn't play 90 minutes today. Plain and simple. And when you don't, the game will come back and beat you."
Â
FULL TIME: Rock Valley 1-2 Illinois Valley
Â
Rock Valley College is 4-2-0 (1-0-0 Region 4). Illinois Valley improves to 6-2-0 (2-0-0). The Golden Eagles are back in action Saturday (Sep. 17) afternoon. The men will host Elgin Community College at Rock Valley at 12:00 PM.
