Men's Soccer Dominates Riverland

8/23/2021 9:20:00 AM

Box Score AUSTIN, Minn. – The Golden Eagles dominated Riverland for much of the match Saturday night. The season-opening match featured four different goal scorers and plenty of fireworks to entertain the 30+ fans that made their way up from Rockford.

Rock Valley College dominated possession in the game's opening moments, controlling 75% possession for the opening 15 minutes.

Freshman Joshua Ceniceros converted one of the five corners for RVC in the 23rd minute. Sophomore Poe Reh served in a driven ball that only a leaping Ceniceros could reach. Despite maintaining much of the possession for the first half, staring into the sun would provide semi-problematic and keep the Golden Eagles scoreless the rest of the first half.

Rock Valley wasted no time in the second half finding the back of the net when freshman Omar Munoz, Jr. eluded two defenders with a cut-back move, then sent a rocket into the side netting 22-yards out. Six minutes later, Ceniceros would thread freshman Roberto Davila through his first goal of the season in the 58th.

Freshman Jeremy Hernandez powered the Golden Eagles final goal of the match past the goalkeeper in the 75th minute when sophomore Bernardo Dominguez found Hernandez to the right of the goal. Hernandez struck first-time and found the crossbar before the ball bounced straight down and over the line.

"Really a complete team effort tonight," said head coach Tim Romanello. "[I think] the sun gave us a bit of problems in the first half trying to break their lines and prevented us from being all that dangerous in the first half."

"A lot of positives to take away from tonight, nearly everyone played and contributed in some way, shape or form," added Romanello.

"Really impressive from a fan perspective," Romanello insisted to mention. "That kind of support from friends and family at our games nearly four hours north speaks volumes and it makes the games even more exciting for the players. [We] really appreciate our fans."

The Golden Eagles outshot Riverland 14-7 and dominated the possession game, keeping the ball for just over 60% of the time.

Rock Valley College is 1-0-0 (0-0-0 Region 4). Riverland drops to 0-1-0 (0-0-0). The Golden Eagles are back in action Wednesday (Aug. 25) evening when they host College of Lake County in the 2021 season opener. The match is scheduled to kickoff at 5 p.m.
