Suffocating Defense Propels Golden Eagles

Malta, IL. – The Rock Valley College Men's Basketball team picked up a huge road win Tuesday night at Kishwaukee 72-58 and, in doing so, collected their first win of the season.
The first half was controlled by Rock Valley and led at halftime 33-29, however things got interesting in the second half.

Kishwaukee opened up the second half by going on a 13-4 run and at one point taking a 42-37 lead. Enter Nick Phillips. The Redshirt Freshman guard from Guilford High School connected on four straight 3 pointers and sparked Rock Valley's offense. The 5'10 guard finished with 12 points, all coming from behind the arc.

The Golden Eagles defense was truly suffocating, only giving up 29 points in each half while holding Kishwaukee to just 25% shooting from behind the arc. Kishwaukee entered the game shooting 43% from 3. A good mixture of defense led to 21 Kougar turnovers.

RVC was led by sophomore forward Bryanth Farr with 13 points and redshirt freshman Nick Phillips with 12. Eleven of Rock Valley's players scored and ten players had more than one made basket.

Coach Sandquist said, "This was a total team effort from the get go, we had early foul trouble and our bench stepped up in a huge way." Rock Valley's bench players outscored Kishwaukee's bench 46-14. Coach Sandquist went on to say, "This team is buying into what we're trying to do defensively, and it showed tonight how good we can be."

Rock Valley is now 1-1 and has its home opener against McHenry County next Tuesday at 7:30pm.
