M-Basketball: Golden Eagles Split at Thanksgiving Classic
Box Score 1 RVC Men's Basketball hosted their first Thanksgiving Classic over the weekend. The Golden Eagles split their two games, beating NJCAA DI Kankakee Community College 82-65 and falling to #19 NJCAA DII Macomb Community College 82-65. RVC Men's Basketball moves to 6-2 overall.
Game 1 vs Kankakee Community College
The Golden Eagles were led by the hot shooting of sophomore
Dalton Menke. The Winnebago HS graduate connected for 8 made 3 PT field goals in the game for a game-high 24 points.
Alec Pena went for 13 points and 6 rebounds. Point guard
Malique Ross flirted with a triple-double, scoring 8 points, hauling in a game-high 9 rebounds, and dishing out 8 assists.
"I like the way we executed," stated Head Men's Basketball Coach
Evan Lavery. "We had 23 assists on our 33 made field goals. We did not shoot a great percentage from the field, but we moved the basketball at a rate that is conducive to offensive success. Defensively, we were solid for most of the game in terms of attention to detail and doing our job each possession."
Game 2 vs Macomb Community College
RVC trailed from start to finish, failing to overcome a slow start. The Golden Eagles turned the basketball over 17 times and missed 11 free throws in the contest.
"Anything that could have went wrong in the game went wrong," said Lavery. "We did not value the basketball, we did not run our stuff well, and we lacked some juice defensively. I did not get these guys ready to play for this one and accept full responsibility for the loss. We need to be better."
RVC was led by 16 points from
Elijah Pappas.
