Bill (“Billy”) Lewis was the first RVC football player to earn All-American honors (1969) and is still widely regarded as the best running back in the program’s history. He scored three touchdowns in an RVC win over the Western Illinois University sophomore team and earned a full scholarship to play football at Eastern Illinois University. He later left school to join the U.S. Army and also played running back for the Army football team.
